Our Belief
The
Scouting movement believes that through adventure and challenge young
people can learn and experience new things that can permanently enrich
their lives, promoting their development and achieving their full
physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential. In this way
they grow and flourish as responsible citizens and as members of their
local, national and international communities.
History
1st
Newbury Sea Scouts have been in existence since the early 1900's, and
have operated from its present site (near St.Bart's school) for over
sixty years. In this time an estimated three to four thousand boys have
benefited from membership and participation.
The
existing buildings are now very decrepit and insecure and are no longer
of a sufficient standard for their modern role as a centre for scouting
activities. The Group owns the plot of land which the present buildings
occupy and, although in 2006 we gained planning approval for a very
substantial new building, spiralling building costs and a shrinking
grant market has caused us to re-think our options.
Our new hut
The
King Edward's School, Bath, is donating a three year old terrapin
building with slate roof, 18m x 7.5m, worth around £70,000 for free,
but it needs to be moved w/c 25th May and transported to our site,
otherwise it will simply be demolished. The building is in excellent
condition and would suit the needs of the Scout group and district very
well.

We
are in an advanced state of planning to make this happen, have talked
with the planning department and have appointed a specialist contractor
for the initial works. We have kindly received £15,000 for the
dismantling and transport of the building to allow us to take advantage
of this significant opportunity from Greenham Common Community Trust.
Parents and scouts and cubs from the group have been clearing the site in preparation for erecting the new hut.

More fund raising opportunities ahead
A
new scout hut will benefit the local community by providing 1st
Newbury Sea Scouts and other Scouting Groups across West Berkshire with
a modern, secure and exciting base in the heart of the community.
It will promote their growth and extend scouting activities to a larger
number of young people in the town and county over the life of the
building. As a training centre with its own land, the HQ will be better
able to host district and county outdoor scouting and fund raising
events.
We
shall be looking to raise more funds so the rebuilding and the vital
ancillary works (toilets, parking, security, services, storage etc) can
also go ahead, such that the entire headquarters is brought up to a
more 21st century standard, but without losing a traditional scouting
feel.
