  • 1st Newbury Sea Scouts make over £600 at Sainsbury's by helping Christmas shoppers

    17th December 2008
1st Newbury Sea Scouts have been working hard to raise funds to finish off their new Sea Scout HQ at Remembrance Road with beavers, cubs and scouts helping Christmas shoppers at Newbury’s Sainsbury’s store on Saturday.  The boys packed bags from 09:30 to 13:30 on one of the store’s busiest days.

As well as raising over £600 from contented shoppers, the boys were congratulated by the Customer Services Clerk for being such a well behaved troop and not holding up the customers as they went through the checkouts!

In addition AWE in Aldermaston have kindly donated a further £150 so, with more donations and matched funding, the Scouts should be able to expand further to allow more beavers, cubs and scouts to join the troop.

Chairman John Tomlinson said: “In these days of electronic gadgets traditional Scouting values and activities are more valuable than ever and we are committed to improving the quality of the scouting experience for young people in and around Newbury. We shall continue our appeal for funds for toilets, parking, services, storage and security to bring the entire headquarters up to a more 21st century standard, but do not intend to lose the traditional Scouting feel.”
